Google Makes “Waves”

As Twitter took over everyone’s lives as the next best thing, it made Social Media more relevant to adults who were secretly waiting for their turn to socialize online without scrutiny. Twitter allowed for people to incorporate their ‘expertise’ into social media, without being spammy. Twitter is rendering other social networks obsolete, MySpace is being overwhelmed by bands, and Facebook is no longer the best avenue for brands to become a relevant member of an adult’s social circle. When Twitter hit the web, it’s live streaming and 140 character limit allowed people and brands to have more of a conversation, without the jabber of ‘millennial speak'.

It was just a matter of time before a new evolution of Social Media would combine the ideas of social technology and bring a new communication service to the web. In an attempt to do so, Google created ‘Wave’, a service that brings e-mail, collaboration, instant messaging, and networking into one platform. The new tool is already making waves and inundating the other social giants with anxiety.

Is There a Google Killer On the Loose?

There is a buzz about the web about the coming of the “next Google” that may nix the search engine giant’s substantial piece of the proverbial pie. It’s name: Wolfram Alpha. Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine that was conceived by a scientist named... Stephen Wolfram. Wolfram Alpha made its much anticipated debut last week and was hyped as the next Google. Despite the fact this it has been commonly compared to search engines, it really wasn’t similar to them at all. Google indexes and searches the web. Wolfram Alpha processes factual data and converted into forms that can be run through computation.

A Short History of Google Pranks

Every year for April Fool’s Day, Google delivers a hoax that are the topic of discussions at water coolers, collaboration stations, and geeky chat forums (guilty) for weeks to follow. The tradition is rich, and the anticipation grows stronger each year as March winds down. Here is a trip down nostalgia boulevard.

Google’s debuted their April Fool’s joke in 2000, two years into its own life. They announced a new “MentalPlex” search technology that supposedly read the user’s mind to determine what they wanted to search for, thus eliminating the step of the search query. This led to a page full of intelligently false results and thus began the tradition of their infamous follow-through and the pinnacle for geek humor each year.

Sharing Knol-edge

brain_picture_0.jpgEvery once in a while it amazes me when I get a real letter from someone in the mail. There are now so many different ways of communicating through email, instant messaging, text, facebook, twitter, etc. that ‘snail mail’ has nearly become obsolete. I find it ironic that we can get just as excited about a letter from the postman as our great grandparents did a century ago, for entirely different reasons. With the internet, we can communicate instantly, read about news that is happening now, and even author our own information on our own expert topics without having to go through a publisher or land a book deal. Last fall, Google went public with an innovative product called Knol. Knols are “authoritative articles” about specific articles, written by people who are experts on these topics.

The web contains almost an endless supply of information, but let’s face it, it’s not all worth reading. However, there is an enormous amount of information that resides in peoples’ heads. Millions of people have knowledge in their brains that could be beneficial for billions of others. Knol encourages people to contribute their knowledge online and allow other people to access and learn.

Google Flexes Their Ad Muscles

A new ad serving market-share study by Attributor, a content-tracking firm, shows that Google is not only a juggernaut in search, but also in the ad-serving market. DoubleClick and AdSense are responsible for more than half of all online-ad-server calls, with 31% and 26% respectively. The next closest was Yahoo, at 10%, followed by AOL and Revenue Science, both at 7%. Microsoft, which owns the Atlas ad-serving system, had only 4% of the market.

One advantage that Google has, and for this particular study, was that it includes both display and text ads. Additionally, text ads and display ads were treated equally. It should be noted, however, that a publisher can often display three text ads where it would have room for only one display ad. On a heavier note, share figures for DoubleClick and AdSense were down 3% and 9%, respectively, from last January.

Overcoming Google Penalties

What does it mean to be penalized by Google? If Google believes that you are guilty of so called "black hat" SEO behavior then your site may be penalized. A penalized site will virtually disappear from all search engine results because Google essentially wipes all indexing history for the site. This is basically the worst thing that can happen to any webmaster and the best way to avoid it is to steer clear of questionable SEO behavior. Spammy content, paid link exchanges, etc. - these will all potentially get your site penalized by the search engines.

Getting Google to crawl deeper

The first step to showing up in Google's search results is to have Google index your site. And you want Google to index every page of your site but this doesn't always happen. In fact, if you don't have a good enough page rank then Google probably won't index your whole site, especially if the site is large. One way you can increase your chances of being indexed is by keeping the search engine spiders away from your lower quality pages. You can block these spiders with proper robots.txt directives.

How to get un-banned on Google

Yesterday we talked about how to know if you've been banned by Google. Today we're going to talk about one of the possible reasons you may have been banned. Sometimes your robot.txt file is inserted improperly. This file tells the search engines what to do when they spider your site. If your tags are wrong then you may be the reason Google isn't indexing your site. Look carefully at how this file is tagged and make sure it isn't keeping Google from spidering your important pages.
