Moving Towards Structured Web

Earlier this week, Google announced that it was going to provide limited support of RDFa, a framework that gives web developers the freedom to integrate structured metadata on their websites. This is an important step towards a more structured web, something that Google has been struggling to embrace for, well, ever. It is also an important move for the Search Engine Optimization industry. Now sit back and watch the champagne sales sky rocket..

The specific ins and outs of RDFa are an entirely different blog post all together. The benefits you reap from using semantic tagging are valuable. If you were to write a blog post about “Manny” without mentioning his last name “Ramirez”, the search engine spiders wouldn’t know you were talking about Manny Ramirez, or the hot topic of his PED-positive drug test. Using RDFa, you can tag the word “Manny” with “Manny Ramirez” and that tag would be visible to the spiders indexing your post. The tag wouldn’t be visible to human readers, so they are not exposed to the extraneous text. The RDFa tags will also allow search engines to find and identify the structural data of a website and present it within the search results. Browsers should be able to interpret this data and present relevant data as well, such as maps or reviews.

Google is easing the web into the implementation of RDFa, by applying it in moderation. That hasn’t stopped the new standard from spreading to a RDFa-supported Yahoo and other sites. Once Google gives it their official, full-blown stamp of approval, the RDFa’s adoption rate will dramatically increase. This also continues, due to their already significant market share, to establish Google as the trend setter and rule maker for how search engine optimization will evolve.

Volacci’s favorite CMS, Drupal 7, will be including it by default. This is just adds to the advantage Drupal’s CMS platform and community has in web development for SEO. This can also help you avoid the faux pas of keyword stuffing, but still be able to have the keyword density that is necessary to have a good crawling relationship with the search spiders. Obviously, semantic tagging will be more important than ever before. However, it can be foreseen that this new standard may allow more ways for black hat SEO to find loopholes in search. But that just comes with the territory of creating a more structured web.

There are still many critics of how Google is implementing the RDFa, calling it a “hobbled” attempt that is ignoring some of the established uses of data tags on websites. Is their slow start to implementation is a sign of trying to avoid major catastrophes? Maybe Google’s learning curve of the RDFa is larger than those who already use RDFa wish, but the fact that Google has made this move is a great beginning to a better future. Drupal Explained

For the past four years, Volacci has been working exclusively with Drupal to create an honest and successful Search Engine Optimization firm and SEO Partner program that delivers results-driven traffic, conversions and content generation. In fact, over the years Volacci has become the leading Drupal SEO firm and prides itself over the mastery of the open source content management system. However, there is one barrier we seem to face with almost every client: What exactly is Drupal? I would like to take this moment to address four years of blank stares and clarify exactly what Drupal is and how it can help your business.

Drupal is a free and open source content management system written in PHP that makes the creation and maintenance of a web site much easier for any non-technical person. It is used as a ‘back end’ system for many different types of websites, ranging from personal websites, blogs, to large corporate and full e-commerce sites like ebay.com. Drupal is the most popular content management system available because it includes the ability to customize to fit the needs and functionalities of the owners and users, as well as having the support of a large open source community.

The standard release of Drupal, known as “Drupal core”, contains common features that are basic to most CMSs: the ability to register and maintain individual user accounts, administration menus, customizable layouts, flexible account privileges, RSS-feeds, blogging system, an Internet forum, and options to create an interactive community website. What sets Drupal apart is its keen ability to allow new features and custom behavior to be added by third parties. No programming skills are required for basic installation and administration, but it does offer a sophisticated programming interface for those savvy developers.

Themes and modules are the essential elements of Drupal. Themes help create the look and feel of a site, which can easily downloaded from a list. You can also develop your own custom themes, but it requires familiarity with PHP and the Drupal framework. Drupal’s modules provide the user with immense functionality that are available in a selection by Drupal. Drupal allows administrators to create users and manage their privileges easily: editing privileges, content creation, and page creation. Modules can also be customized in the same way as themes.

For some videos on introducing and implementing Drupal online, check out these out: Introducing Drupal and Implementing Drupal. Drupal is easy to use and easy to design with very few adoption barriers. You don’t have to contribute code to the innards of Drupal to make the changes you need. You just create or add on modules and themes to get the new looks and features you want. One of the greatest perks of using Drupal is that they really want people to contribute to making the CMS bigger, better and more efficient, and they make it easy to do so.

Many companies would love to have the time needed to optimize their website with Drupal, but can’t allocate the resources to do so. That is why it is imperative to hire a qualified SEO firm or to enlist in an SEO Partner Program that provides you with the Drupal expertise and knowledge that gets you ranked well and converting strong with your website. Three Ways to Utilize Drupal

One of the first decisions you have to make when building a website is choosing a content management system (CMS). It is important to establish the objective of your site before you invest any elbow grease into your digital home. Ideally, you would like to choose a CMS that is easy to use with a wide range of functionality. Thorough research is always recommended, but that may just be how you found this blog post... Let me save you some time: Drupal is an excellent choice for any type of webmaster because it is easy to theme, it has the functionality of Bo Jackson (in his prime) and is supported by a large community of powerful “Drupalonians”. Not sold yet? Here are three ways to utilize Drupal for your website.

1. Blogging

Everyone is doing it. In fact, there are some who feel that if ‘you ain’t bloggin’, you ain’t communicatin’. This is one of the most common uses for Drupalonians and one of the functions you will probably use on a daily basis. Drupal comes ready for blogging straight out of the box and has many modules available that will enhance your blog’s functionality.

There is a micro blog module that allows users the option to have their post titles posted to all enable microblogging services, such as Twitter and Facebook.

No one likes spam, or spam for that matter. BlogSpam provides a central location on your site where you can checks comments for various spam indicators.

If you still need help to get your blog where you want it to be, look into Blog Aid. It is a helper module for bloggers that contains some usability enhancements for content creation and management. It is designed for one user blog sites, and helps reduce the amount of clicking you need to get to the end result.

2. News Portal

For those folks who want or need to have tons of information on their site, Drupal is the way to go. There is a module called Views that provides a flexible method for webmasters and designers to control how lists and tables are presented. It is basically a “smart query builder” that allows you to display information in uniquely different ways. In the words of Ferris Bueller, “it is so choice”.

3. User-Specific Site

Drupal prides itself in its user management system, with user profiles ready to be created from the get-go. It also comes with the ability to connect your website to Twitter and Facebook. A module called Organic Groups that allows people to organize themselves into groups that can have their own themes, language, taxonomy and the ability to be selective or not. It’s like middle school all over again!

These three utilizations of Drupal are just a glimpse into the possibilities of the popular content management system. Many Drupalonians will attest that it has been a guiding light for their online businesses. Transitioning to the web can be a frustrating and discouraging task, if you don’t use the right tools for your product and service, but it is still a necessary process if you want to stay afloat in today’s world. Researching Backlinks for Drupal SEO

One of the most beneficial SEO executions for your Drupal website is building quality backlinks. The idea behind building backlinks as part of the page rank algorithm is that if a page has great content, people will start linking to it. The more quality backlinks a page has, the better. But you shouldn’t rely too heavily on the fact that the content is good and quality people will automatically link to you. It is true that if the quality of content is great, so will the backlinks, but what you get without any effort will be considerably less than what you need to successfully increase your rankings. Finding quality back links can take a lot of effort, but if you use an advanced search operator, it will deliver consistently over time.

Finding quality back links can take a lot of effort, but if you use an advanced search operator, it will deliver consistently over time.

Research Prospects

The first step you have to do is research what backlinks you want to create and find the proper prospective websites. A great Google search command to build link prospects is the “Allinurl” command. Let’s say you want to find a Drupal website on that does web design.

Just type: “allinurl: Drupal design” in Google without the quotes to find sites with “Drupal” and “design” in the URL. Don’t forget that there are other important related keywords or variations that can prove to be valuable to your specific link building campaign.

Advanced Research

If you are looking to receive links back through commenting on other sites with the ability for visitors to leave comments without using “rel=nofollow” then you can get creative. Drupal is one of the content management systems that do not include the rel=nofollow. So, using the same basic keywords or related phrases, you can locate some great sites that you can potentially get comment links.

Type in “allinurl:q=node design”. This search command looks for Drupal’s standard non search engine friendly URL format condition with the keyword “design” also in the URL.

Drupal sites with keyword phrase “Drupal design” with comments turned on and that allow HTML links to be added are almost always followed:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22drupal+design%22+%22All...

Want to get more specific and search for the keyword in the title? Try the “intitle:” search operator.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=intitle%3Adrupal+design+%2...

If, for some unknown reason, you want to go the broad route not specify the CMS platform and just search for sites allowing the HTML tag, which usually specifies a followed link and brings up endless results:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22Allowed+HTML+tags%3A+%3...

Building up quality backlinks for your site doesn’t have to complicated process, but it does take time and effort. If you want the benefit of quality backlinks, but don’t have the time, you should find a reputable SEO company that can do it for you the right way.
