Drupal vs. eZ Publish

When it comes to crowning the king of content management systems, the debate is always heated and someone goes home with a sore thumb. Agree to disagree, as they say. What people can agree on is that different content management systems have their strengths and, given the context of the project, may be better fits than others. The SEO-hungry folks here at Volacci are firm believers in Drupal’s CMS, the little blue man in the suit. But to be fair, let’s take a look at how Drupal and it’s competitor, eZ Publish, compare side by side.

eZ Publish eZ Publish is a content management (eco)system that doesn’t lack in sophistication. It is backed by a commercial entity, eZ Systems, whose open source format boasts of being the world’s largest Open Source Content Management software company. The strengths of eZ Publish include a flexible admin, which allows the user a simple approach to content management with a toolbar, or a heavily featured administrative back office, commercial support with extensions that allow easy implementation of workflow. eZ Publish also has invested a great deal in their web publishing space to meet the needs of online publishers. Their eZ Flow add-on allows the sophisticated content controls that anyone in the management position would appreciate.
Unfortunately, eZ Publish doesn’t have as strong social media or community features and is more difficult to implement extensions. To be fair, eZ Publish is coming out of a strong restructuring and active development phase from last year. Drupal Drupal has many strengths, including the aforementioned social media and community features to allow a high level of UGC that it can handle. Drupal has amazing admin controls and modules that can allow any member of the content team to independently contribute from any approved station. Drupal also offers an extensive library of customizable modules for rapid prototyping and implementation. Their features tend to be very fast and always ready to hit their energetic community with familiarity. Drupal also encourages its highly engaged community to take their tools and customizing them ever more. Innovation helps drive Drupal’s success as a insanely popular content management system. When you are choosing the content management system for your company, client or project, be sure to do your homework. Find the CMS that fits your need and skill level. SEO Keys For Choosing a CMS

Search engine optimization can be an absolutely terrifying concept when viewed from afar. The time commitment and knowledge necessary for a highly-optimized site can stimie even the most seasoned CMO. So when it comes to starting that inevitable transition to the web, you can save a lifetime of stress and mistakes by choosing the right content management system (CMS) for your business. The right CMS can make SEO easy, or seemingly impossible, depending upon your decision. Here are some keys to choosing the right CMS for your online presence.

Control over titles, headings and meta descriptions

It is almost SEO blasphemy that there are CMS’ that don’t allow you the control over these are basic page elements. What makes it even worse is that said vendors will charge you extra “customization” fees to change these elements. If a vendor charges anything for these capabilities, get the frakk out of there.

Control over duplicate content

Duplicate content is one of the most common mistakes made on websites. Great CMS’ will either avoid these problems all together, or proactively give you a way to deal with them.

Custom anchor text

Make sure that the CMS you use allows you to customize your anchor text. Many systems cannot do this, so do not assume that you have these capabilities.

Image alt attributes

Image alt attributes are the best method you have to tell a search engine what the image on your site is about. This capability is a must-have, so the ability to implement the alt attribute within your image tags is essential to a great CMS.

Customizable URL structure

Your SEO team or firm is the only group who should be deciding the URL structure of your website. If a vendor or CMS service does not allow you control over this, get the frakk out of there.

Sitemap generation

Having an XML sitemap for your site is absolutely essential for any website. Make sure you have a CMS that can help to create one.

Making sure that you are investing in a search-friendly CMS system is the most important decision you can make with your website. A great search-friendly CMS is Drupal, a free, open source content management platform that supports a variety of websites ranging from personal blogs to community-driven websites. Drupal Wins Webware 100 Honor

For the third year in a row, Drupal was named a winner of CNET’s Webware 100. Drupal won in the “Social and Publishing” category as one of the top 100 web 2.0 services and applications, along with Facebook, Twitter, and seven other services. The way the Webware 100 winners are chosen is by a popular vote from a large group that was picked by CNET’s editors.

As you may know, Drupal is a popular publishing and content management system that allows users to add all categories of content to web pages through a variety of modules. It is a free, open-source software that is used on a number of popular sites, such as The Onion, the satirical news publication, as well as the United Kingdom’s MTV website.

The award speaks for itself. Drupal is growing steadily as a user-friendly platform for any person or business to launch their online presence. Why Drupal Should Be Your CMS

If you are starting a new website, whether it be personal or business-related, but are not considered “skilled” in HTML or web development, it is a highly recommended that you use a content management system (CMS). A content management system is a software system that allows you to create, manage, edit, and update new and existing pages on a site. Basically, its the easiest and most efficient way to launch a website... yesterday.

Content management systems will allow you to perform basic design and layout. This includes a logo or banner at the top, standard navigation capabilities across the top, down the left side and in the footer. There will also be a large blank area where your content should be inserted, upon creation. This layout format, once tweaked to your liking, is converted into a master template for all designated pages. While this template is being converted, your CMS admin backend is being integrated and tested properly. The Administrator can then assign content producers and give them access and instructions on how to add content, text, images, and video appropriately. Everything that is added is saved in the database. Most CMSes are very intuitive and easy to operate, so the learning curve is much smaller than learning how to write HTML code by hand.

Every new venture required some start-up capital and launching a website is no different. You will want to find the right content management system for you, for the right price. There are proprietary CMSes that come loaded with features and have excellent customer service and tech support. However, they can cost up to $500,000 (yowzas!) and sometimes require a down payment of your soul. Sure, they can perform some unique functions, like archives and built-in search engines, but aren’t necessary for running a profitable or popular site.

Open Source CMSes are typically free and very easy to install and use. The best open source CMS available out there is Drupal. The Drupal community is very large and friendly, allowing a breadth of customer and tech support, as well as a healthy community of forums dedicated to the popular system. Drupal also has a large catalog of modules and nodes that can be customized and added on to the core of Drupal, so customization is very easy and highly encouraged. Volacci is the leading Drupal SEO company and very passionate about your online success. By the end of your contract you will have at least as much additional business from your web site as you spend on our services... or we'll work for free until you do.

Drupal Clones: Better than Star Wars?

There are only a handful of things Volaccians love more than Star Wars, and one of them is Drupal. Drupal is an awesome content management system for any company wanting to build a website or seven. It’s uses range from a simple blog to an extensive corporate or political site for any fevered advocate. Drupal is the swiss army knife of web site construction, and I recently ran across an impressive article by Glenn of Web Jackalope on the different clones that Drupal can be used for, you can read the entire post here. The greatest thing about the post is that it lacks the impatient whining of Anakin Skywalker, something that any original trilogy fan would use their time machine to go back and change.

Digg Clone

To clone a site like Digg, you just need to allow users to submit links to content, vote, comment and moderate the submitted links. Drupal’s Drigg allows you to all of these things in one module. Drigg will create a voting site that is identical to Digg that allows any user to submit links, vote, share, etc.

Twitter Clone

If you can’t get enough of Twitter, you are in luck my Drupal friend. Drupal has a microblogging module that can copy almost all the features of Twitter: micro-messaging, following, timelines, and community cross-platform messaging.

Flickr Clone

Combine the internet with the accessibility to digital cameras and everyone’s Annie Leibovitz. Now you can have your own online photo gallery in the vein of Flickr or Photobucket with Drupal’s Image module. this module allows you to upload images, create thumbnails and set up galleries for your visitors to view and comment on.

YouTube Clone

Did you know that YouTube is the second largest search engine on the internet, second only to Google? If you don’t believe me, google it. Drupal gives you the opportunity, but not the ambition, to create your own video sharing site like YouTube. FlashVideo is a module that will give your Drupal website the functionality to convert uploaded files to flash. FlashVideo also has the ability to embed the videos onto all the other social networking sites that you plaster with content.

Amazon Clone

Want to sell some stuff? Drupal has a few tremendous ecommerce modules that are capable of helping recreate an Amazon clone. e-Commerce and Ubercart provide a great feature list that can help you become the next internet millionaire.

These are just a few Drupal clones that Glen from Web Jackalope discussed, and just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Drupal modules. Drupal is an amazing content management system that is growing and adapting with its users needs. It is very easy to use and allows incredible access to any third-party user with an idea and ambition. Volacci is the leading Drupal SEO company and very passionate about your online success. Moving Towards Structured Web

Earlier this week, Google announced that it was going to provide limited support of RDFa, a framework that gives web developers the freedom to integrate structured metadata on their websites. This is an important step towards a more structured web, something that Google has been struggling to embrace for, well, ever. It is also an important move for the Search Engine Optimization industry. Now sit back and watch the champagne sales sky rocket..

The specific ins and outs of RDFa are an entirely different blog post all together. The benefits you reap from using semantic tagging are valuable. If you were to write a blog post about “Manny” without mentioning his last name “Ramirez”, the search engine spiders wouldn’t know you were talking about Manny Ramirez, or the hot topic of his PED-positive drug test. Using RDFa, you can tag the word “Manny” with “Manny Ramirez” and that tag would be visible to the spiders indexing your post. The tag wouldn’t be visible to human readers, so they are not exposed to the extraneous text. The RDFa tags will also allow search engines to find and identify the structural data of a website and present it within the search results. Browsers should be able to interpret this data and present relevant data as well, such as maps or reviews.

Google is easing the web into the implementation of RDFa, by applying it in moderation. That hasn’t stopped the new standard from spreading to a RDFa-supported Yahoo and other sites. Once Google gives it their official, full-blown stamp of approval, the RDFa’s adoption rate will dramatically increase. This also continues, due to their already significant market share, to establish Google as the trend setter and rule maker for how search engine optimization will evolve.

Volacci’s favorite CMS, Drupal 7, will be including it by default. This is just adds to the advantage Drupal’s CMS platform and community has in web development for SEO. This can also help you avoid the faux pas of keyword stuffing, but still be able to have the keyword density that is necessary to have a good crawling relationship with the search spiders. Obviously, semantic tagging will be more important than ever before. However, it can be foreseen that this new standard may allow more ways for black hat SEO to find loopholes in search. But that just comes with the territory of creating a more structured web.

There are still many critics of how Google is implementing the RDFa, calling it a “hobbled” attempt that is ignoring some of the established uses of data tags on websites. Is their slow start to implementation is a sign of trying to avoid major catastrophes? Maybe Google’s learning curve of the RDFa is larger than those who already use RDFa wish, but the fact that Google has made this move is a great beginning to a better future. Drupal Explained

For the past four years, Volacci has been working exclusively with Drupal to create an honest and successful Search Engine Optimization firm and SEO Partner program that delivers results-driven traffic, conversions and content generation. In fact, over the years Volacci has become the leading Drupal SEO firm and prides itself over the mastery of the open source content management system. However, there is one barrier we seem to face with almost every client: What exactly is Drupal? I would like to take this moment to address four years of blank stares and clarify exactly what Drupal is and how it can help your business.

Drupal is a free and open source content management system written in PHP that makes the creation and maintenance of a web site much easier for any non-technical person. It is used as a ‘back end’ system for many different types of websites, ranging from personal websites, blogs, to large corporate and full e-commerce sites like ebay.com. Drupal is the most popular content management system available because it includes the ability to customize to fit the needs and functionalities of the owners and users, as well as having the support of a large open source community.

The standard release of Drupal, known as “Drupal core”, contains common features that are basic to most CMSs: the ability to register and maintain individual user accounts, administration menus, customizable layouts, flexible account privileges, RSS-feeds, blogging system, an Internet forum, and options to create an interactive community website. What sets Drupal apart is its keen ability to allow new features and custom behavior to be added by third parties. No programming skills are required for basic installation and administration, but it does offer a sophisticated programming interface for those savvy developers.

Themes and modules are the essential elements of Drupal. Themes help create the look and feel of a site, which can easily downloaded from a list. You can also develop your own custom themes, but it requires familiarity with PHP and the Drupal framework. Drupal’s modules provide the user with immense functionality that are available in a selection by Drupal. Drupal allows administrators to create users and manage their privileges easily: editing privileges, content creation, and page creation. Modules can also be customized in the same way as themes.

For some videos on introducing and implementing Drupal online, check out these out: Introducing Drupal and Implementing Drupal. Drupal is easy to use and easy to design with very few adoption barriers. You don’t have to contribute code to the innards of Drupal to make the changes you need. You just create or add on modules and themes to get the new looks and features you want. One of the greatest perks of using Drupal is that they really want people to contribute to making the CMS bigger, better and more efficient, and they make it easy to do so.

Many companies would love to have the time needed to optimize their website with Drupal, but can’t allocate the resources to do so. That is why it is imperative to hire a qualified SEO firm or to enlist in an SEO Partner Program that provides you with the Drupal expertise and knowledge that gets you ranked well and converting strong with your website. Three Ways to Utilize Drupal

One of the first decisions you have to make when building a website is choosing a content management system (CMS). It is important to establish the objective of your site before you invest any elbow grease into your digital home. Ideally, you would like to choose a CMS that is easy to use with a wide range of functionality. Thorough research is always recommended, but that may just be how you found this blog post... Let me save you some time: Drupal is an excellent choice for any type of webmaster because it is easy to theme, it has the functionality of Bo Jackson (in his prime) and is supported by a large community of powerful “Drupalonians”. Not sold yet? Here are three ways to utilize Drupal for your website.

1. Blogging

Everyone is doing it. In fact, there are some who feel that if ‘you ain’t bloggin’, you ain’t communicatin’. This is one of the most common uses for Drupalonians and one of the functions you will probably use on a daily basis. Drupal comes ready for blogging straight out of the box and has many modules available that will enhance your blog’s functionality.

There is a micro blog module that allows users the option to have their post titles posted to all enable microblogging services, such as Twitter and Facebook.

No one likes spam, or spam for that matter. BlogSpam provides a central location on your site where you can checks comments for various spam indicators.

If you still need help to get your blog where you want it to be, look into Blog Aid. It is a helper module for bloggers that contains some usability enhancements for content creation and management. It is designed for one user blog sites, and helps reduce the amount of clicking you need to get to the end result.

2. News Portal

For those folks who want or need to have tons of information on their site, Drupal is the way to go. There is a module called Views that provides a flexible method for webmasters and designers to control how lists and tables are presented. It is basically a “smart query builder” that allows you to display information in uniquely different ways. In the words of Ferris Bueller, “it is so choice”.

3. User-Specific Site

Drupal prides itself in its user management system, with user profiles ready to be created from the get-go. It also comes with the ability to connect your website to Twitter and Facebook. A module called Organic Groups that allows people to organize themselves into groups that can have their own themes, language, taxonomy and the ability to be selective or not. It’s like middle school all over again!

These three utilizations of Drupal are just a glimpse into the possibilities of the popular content management system. Many Drupalonians will attest that it has been a guiding light for their online businesses. Transitioning to the web can be a frustrating and discouraging task, if you don’t use the right tools for your product and service, but it is still a necessary process if you want to stay afloat in today’s world. Volacci is the leading Drupal SEO company and very passionate about your online success. By the end of your contract you will have at least as much additional business from your web site as you spend on our services... or we'll work for free until you do.

Researching Backlinks for Drupal SEO

One of the most beneficial SEO executions for your Drupal website is building quality backlinks. The idea behind building backlinks as part of the page rank algorithm is that if a page has great content, people will start linking to it. The more quality backlinks a page has, the better. But you shouldn’t rely too heavily on the fact that the content is good and quality people will automatically link to you. It is true that if the quality of content is great, so will the backlinks, but what you get without any effort will be considerably less than what you need to successfully increase your rankings. Finding quality back links can take a lot of effort, but if you use an advanced search operator, it will deliver consistently over time.

One of the most beneficial SEO executions for your Drupal website is building quality backlinks. But you shouldn’t rely too heavily on the fact that the content is good and quality people will automatically link to you. Finding quality back links can take a lot of effort, but if you use an advanced search operator, it will deliver consistently over time.

Research Prospects

The first step you have to do is research what backlinks you want to create and find the proper prospective websites. A great Google search command to build link prospects is the “Allinurl” command. Let’s say you want to find a Drupal website on that does web design.

Just type: “allinurl: Drupal design” in Google without the quotes to find sites with “Drupal” and “design” in the URL. Don’t forget that there are other important related keywords or variations that can prove to be valuable to your specific link building campaign.

Advanced Research

If you are looking to receive links back through commenting on other sites with the ability for visitors to leave comments without using “rel=nofollow” then you can get creative. Drupal is one of the content management systems that do not include the rel=nofollow. So, using the same basic keywords or related phrases, you can locate some great sites that you can potentially get comment links.

Type in “allinurl:q=node design”. This search command looks for Drupal’s standard non search engine friendly URL format condition with the keyword “design” also in the URL.

Drupal sites with keyword phrase “Drupal design” with comments turned on and that allow HTML links to be added are almost always followed:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22drupal+design%22+%22All...

Want to get more specific and search for the keyword in the title? Try the “intitle:” search operator.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=intitle%3Adrupal+design+%2...

If, for some unknown reason, you want to go the broad route not specify the CMS platform and just search for sites allowing the HTML tag, which usually specifies a followed link and brings up endless results:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22Allowed+HTML+tags%3A+%3...

Building up quality backlinks for your site doesn’t have to complicated process, but it does take time and effort. If you want the benefit of quality backlinks, but don’t have the time, you should find a reputable SEO company that can do it for you the right way.
