It's Your Fault [Ben's Productivity Podcast]
When it's your fault, at least you're in control
Tip of the day: Your decisions affect the outcome of your life.
Hi, welcome to the podcast. I'd like to talk today about something that I think is important to realize when you're dealing with issues in situations in your life and work. And that's that it's your fault, thank god. The idea here is that no matter what happens to you in your life, you're in that situation, or what's happening to you is happening to you because of decisions that you have made. And I know it sounds like that may be kind of a blaming idea, and it's certainly not something that I would ever say to somebody on my staff or somebody that I know, but it is something that empowers me and that's because if it's my fault, that means that I am in control of it. I'm there because of the decisions I made. I can learn from it and then make new decisions in the future. If it's not my fault, if it's because of something that somebody else did, if it's the economy, or if it's the decision that somebody else made, or my boss or whatever the situation is, then I'm no longer in control and I can't fix it. I can't change the situation. So, to realize that it's my fault, thank god, I can change it and I can do something about that. And then I start to walk back and look at the decision I made or the people that I'm working with or the time that I'm spending or what I'm doing or am I focused on the right things. And then I start making new decisions that will lead me to the result that I'm looking for. So that's it for the podcast today. I wanted to encourage you as you go through your day today and you deal with different issues, to recognize the power of that encouraging statement. It is your fault, thank god.
