The Main Thing [Ben's Productivity Podcast]
The importance of having and maintaining a 'main thing'
Tip of the day: Focus on the most important things, and the other things will fall into place.
Hi, welcome to the podcast. I'd like to start a new series today called "Thinking Thursday" and this is a day where I'm going to pose a question to you and talk a little bit about it and ask you to spend some time thinking about it. I believe that Thursdays, anyway for me, are good days to think about things. I try to keep my calendar open and it's a day of planning for me. In any case, today I want you to think about this question: What is your main thing?
Jesus, in the book of Matthew said, "do not worry sang what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear, your heavenly father knows that you need them. Instead, seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well." The message there was: focus on the most important things and the other things will fall into place. And one of the things that I've done in my life is really focused on and making sure my two sons, Andrew and John, had a parent with them, specifically me on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and my wife who's a professor at the University of Texas on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And I made that my 'main thing' and I built my business around the idea that I needed to work on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I needed to spend a lot more time with my family. And by keeping that in the forefront of all the decisions that I made, it allowed me to make decisions quicker and easier and to do things much more effectively than I could otherwise. So that's my question for you: What is your main thing? Do you know it? Do you keep it at the forefront of your mind? And are you making your decisions around that idea, around that main thing? That's it for this week, thanks for listening.
