How you tell the search engines your most important pages

How do the search engines know which are the most important pages on your site? Sometimes you are actually the one who tells them. One way you communicate this is with the pages on your own site that you commonly link to. If you refer to a certain page on many of your newly published pages, then the search engines will assume that this is one of the most vital resources on your website. So whether you were aware of it or not you are already telling the search engines which pages you feel have the most relevant content. Now that you know this you can be more strategic about which pages you regularly link to.
