The Future of the Internet
Everyone seems to have their own idea of the future and what technologies it holds for us. In the 1989 movie blockbuster, Back to the Future II, Robert Zemeckis gave us flying cars, hoverboards and food hydrators as a prominent function of our society in 2015. Great Scotts, that is only six years and nine days away! I’m still waiting for that hoverboard to appear under the Christmas tree and by now I know its a long shot. Movie directors and screenwriters may not be the best source for reliable trends in technology, which is a clear indication of how far off we can be with our imaginations of innovation. So after my last viewing of Marty McFly’s antics through time, I studied technology trends research published this month by the Pew Research Center of the Future of the Internet.
According to Pew’s recent report on the evolution of the online technology, Internet leaders, experts and analysts expect major tech advances as the phone becomes a primary device for online access. As voice-recognition improves, artificial and virtual reality will become embedded in everyday life and will change the architecture of the Internet itself. There is disagreement about whether this will increase or decrease social tolerance in human relations and improve home lives. Experts do agree that the mobile device will be the primary connection to the Internet for most people in the world by 2020. Voice recognition and touch user-interfaces with the Internet will be more prevalent and accepted by 2020. There will be less of a division between personal time and work time for online use for everyone who is connected and the results will mixed in their impact on basic social relations.
These technological trends and predictions of the evolution of the Internet and its use in society could go the way of hoverboard or they could be a common function of society, and we could look back at 2008 and wonder how we ever lived without them. Unfortunately, my Delorian is in the shop, so we may never know until it happens.
