Submitting to the right directories

We talk a lot about the importance of other sites linking to you. If a valuable directory out there has a link to your website then that looks good to everyone, including the search engines. But what about these services that promise to place your link in hundreds of directories? The more directories your link is in the better, right?
Not necessarily and in fact most of those directories are worthless because no one visits them; neither people nor search engines. What you should know is that most of these directories were created to make money off of people who are looking for inbound links, they were not created to be a valuable Internet resource.
