There is a common misperception that link bait is a blackhat technique. There are actually plenty of link bait techniques that are whitehat. Matt Cutts of Google recently covered one such example through a Youtube video that can be seen here. He explains that link bait is just something that people want to link to, like a resource, open source software, a good service, or something that is just creative and interesting.
Matt Cutts uses a website, www.doloreslabs.com, that uses Amazon’s Mechanical Turk in some interesting ways, as an example. They took the top 200 most followed people on Twitter, like Matt Cutts, Guy Kawasaki, President Obama and Kevin Rose. On Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, they show the last five tweets of each person and asked for people to use five adjectives to describe each person through tweets. For Matt Cutts, the responses were “snore”, “programmer”, “knowledgeable” and “cute”. The overall move was a huge success for linking to the site, and the company, Dolores Labs, spent only $25.
You don’t have to spend a ton of money on all these online conversations. All it takes is a creative hook and intelligent implementation, and you can have a new way to engage within the online community. Get people excited about your link bait, and you will reap endless benefits.

Competitors were outranking me because I was nowhere to be seen. My website was probably 20 or 30 pages back until I engaged with Volacci… Now I’m getting phone calls from people saying ‘I found you on the Internet’.
