Online businesses and their websites receive traffic from a number of different avenues: article marketing, search engines, and social media, to name a few. A recent study by ad network Chitika analyzed the browsing habits of 33 million Internet users over the month of September to take a look at where the most loyal visitors click from.

According to the study findings, Facebook is the most valuable source of loyal visitors, with roughly 20 percent of those that originate from the social site visiting a site they landed on four or more times a week. Other social media sites that ranked were Digg, producing loyal users 16 percent of the time, and Twitter, with 11 percent loyalty.

In the mighty realm of search engines, Yahoo yielded the most loyal visitors at 15 percent, while Google and Bing both experienced around 12 percent loyalty each.

The fact that social media sites provide traffic isn’t astonishing, but the implications of their loyalty rankings are encouraging. Engaging with visitor through Facebook or Twitter and encouraging them to share with others will provide significant value to your site. It may not yield a boost in short-term traffic, but it could pay off in brand value in the long run.
