As Twitter becomes more culturally and socially responsible for information dissemination, it may be time to take a serious look at its capabilities. Rumors have been flying around like vultures that Google will soon be offering real-time search capabilities and indexing tweets, which can already be held against or for you online. Google is already indexing tweets, just not in real-time. If you are one of those businesses that haven’t tasted the Twitter kool-aid, it may be time to give in to the next generation’s contribution to media. Here are some tips that will help you maximize your social media investment.
1. Choose Your Handle Wisely
Your handle, or username, needs to be relevant to your brand or business and easy to remember. Your handle will then become part of your customized Twitter URL. This not only makes your profile easy to find, it makes it easy to index for search and increases its usability on other sites like Facebook. If you can keep your username relevant and short, it will be easy to retweet for more free marketing.
2. Biographies Count
Your Twitter biography needs to have the more important branding messaging written here. You only have 160 characters, so make it count! Optimizing this copy will ensure it is consistently indexed and that your site is always relevant to the overall branding you have online.
3. Choose Your Words Carefully
You only 140 characters per tweet. Approximately 42 characters are factored into each tweet’s title tag, including the account name, as well as the initial characters to each tweet.. This gives SEO importance to the beginning of each tweet. Use your SEO keywords wisely and carefully for each tweet to make sure that Google is attributing those to your overall online branding.
Twitter and social media aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they are bringing together the balance between the elbow grease and the fun police of the web. Who knew that was going to produce something useful and relevant? Social media’s importance to industries such as SEO is going to increasingly influence the future. You can either continue to ignore it, or learn to use and embrace it.
