U.S. Mobile Advertising Market to Reach $3 Billion By 2014

The strategic and financial media company, BIA/Kelsey, released a new report today that shows a forecast of revenues in the U.S. mobile advertising industry over the next four years. The forecast shows a growth from $491 million in 2009 to 2.9 billion in 2014.

The study included any advertising placed in mobile search: text-based search ads (in mobile search queries), display ads (app and mobile Web inventory) and SMS (commercial SMS messaging). Here is a forecast breakdown for the different types of mobile advertising formats and how they will individually grow:

In this forecast period, BIA/Kelsey expects the U.S. mobile advertising market for search ad revenues to grow from $59 million to $1.6 billion, U.S. mobile display ad revenues to grow from $206 million to $803 million, and U.S. mobile SMS ad revenues to grow from $226 million to $562 million.
Here is a look at how the different formats breakdown in growth:

For local mobile advertising, BIA/Kelsey expects the U.S. local mobile advertising revenues to grow from $213 million in 2009 to $2.03 billion in 2014. This is a 44 percent of total U.S. mobile ad revenues in 2009, and is projected to grow to 69 percent in 2014. BIA/Kelsey defines local mobile advertising as “ads that target users based on their location.”

Based on these predictions, and the steady increase of smartphones and mobile technology, it is easy to say that mobile search advertising has the biggest potential for growth over the next few years. This is a huge opportunity for both the Googles, Bings and Moms-and-Pops of the world, as mobile advertising tends to level the playing field for almost anyone with a solid Web presence.
