If you are implementing an SEO campaign for your company’s website, then you are always looking for ways to climb to the top of the search engine rankings. Even the beginners know that you have to the a good, sturdy rope to even begin, and that’s where on-page SEO comes in: Link building, keyword optimization, and getting those tags plugged with the right copy will slowly and steadily get you up the cliff. But if you want to have a little extra boost, you may want to look at other ways to help your SEO efforts. You should always submit your website to directories.
There has been frivolous debate about content creation, directory submissions and whether they actually provide a boost to your SEO or not. This can make it difficult to determine how much time you would like to spend on submitting the website to directories. Here are some considerations when budgeting your time and resources:
1. The Higher The Better
When choosing the directories to submit to, take a look at their individual PageRank. The directories that you submit to should have a high PageRank. However, your listing will rarely be on the homepage of the directory, but deep in the directory on a page with little to no PageRank value. This ultimately means that you will some value from directories, but its not going to shoot you up like a jetpack.
2. Anchor That Text!
Directories links may not add as much link value as you can get from other valuable sources, but they are helpful when done correctly. It is important to include your keywords in your anchor text because this is the one thing that will still be registered and provide you the most value from your submission. Use your primary keywords, because the link submission will have to be your home page.
3. Payment
There are literary thousands of directories out there that will allow you to submit for free. With that being said, if you are asked to pay for your submission, you had better take a good look at how valuable that directory is compared to the free options. There are some directories that are worth it, e.g. Yell, but if you don’t want or need to pay, ignore the paying sites immediately.
4. Manual Review
Some directories will add your listing before actually checking it, while others manually review the listing before submitting it. Search engines tend to add less value to the directories that don’t manually review their listings, so you should heavily consider looking for directories with a manual review system in place.
Submitting your website to directories is a beneficial SEO effort that will help you fine-tune your rankings. Even with SEO, the little things matter. If you spend a little time everyday submitting to sites, you will find that it can significantly help out your rankings. You may even find some customers and conversions by doing so. However, this should not be priority number one in your campaign.
